Measured accuracy by language

We sent about 1.5 minutes of speech per language from Google's public FLEURS test set (read sentences, CC BY 4.0) through the same speech recognition Subtylo uses, and counted the words it got wrong, ignoring capital letters and punctuation. Measured on 25 October 2026. The language was detected correctly in all 20.

Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai are counted by character, because their words are not separated by spaces the same way. These are clean recordings: speech over loud music, slang and fast talk will have more mistakes, which is why every line can be edited before you download.

Other languages

The speech model (OpenAI's Whisper large-v3-turbo) recognizes about 100 languages, so yours may work even if it is not in the table. We have not measured those yet. Trying is free and shows you the captions before you download anything.

Right-to-left and non-Latin scripts

Arabic and Hebrew captions read right to left, with English words inside them kept in order. Chinese, Japanese and Thai captions are written without spaces between words. Letters are drawn with the fonts of your own device, so phones and computers with that language installed show it correctly.

Common questions

Can Subtylo translate my captions?

Not yet. Captions are written in the language that is spoken in the video.

Do I have to choose the language?

No. It is detected from the speech. In our test it picked the right language in all 20 languages.

What if a word is wrong?

Click the line in the editor and type the fix; the caption and the downloaded video change with it.

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. Open the page and choose a video. If you buy a plan, you get an access code instead of an account.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is opened and rendered in your browser. Only its sound, converted to low-quality mono audio, is sent to our server for speech recognition, and we don't store it.

Which videos work?

Videos up to 3 minutes in the formats your browser can play: MP4 and WebM everywhere, MOV best in Safari. The video needs speech for captions to appear.

Which languages?

The language is detected from the speech and the captions are written in it (no translation yet). We measured 20 languages; Spanish, Italian, German and Russian get fewer than 4 words in 100 wrong, Hindi and Thai the most. See supported languages. You can fix any word before you download.

How long does the download take?

About as long as the video itself: a 30-second video takes about 30 seconds, because your browser plays it once while burning in the captions. Keep the tab open while it runs.

Which file do I get?

An MP4 in Chrome, Edge and Safari, which works everywhere. Firefox makes a WebM file; for TikTok and Instagram use Chrome, Edge or Safari.

How do I cancel or get a refund?

Cancel Pro anytime at app.link.com or by email. Ask within 14 days of a payment and you get the full amount back; see the refund policy.

How big can my video be?

Up to 3 minutes long and 1.5 GB. Any shape works: vertical 9:16, square or landscape; the download keeps your video's shape.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in your phone's browser (Safari or Chrome). If you opened this page from Instagram or TikTok, open it in your browser first, because downloads may not work inside those apps. Keep the tab open while your video is made.

How do I get help?

Email support@usefulshed.com with what you tried and, if you bought a plan, your access code or the email you paid with.
